John Bul Dau

Gain a new and humbling perspective of success, adversity, leadership and perseverance as John Bul Dau reveals his story from South Sudanese refugee to prominent human rights advocate and entrepreneur.

Born in war-torn South Sudan, John was just 13 when he faced starvation, disease and violence as one of 27,000 boys driven from their villages during the country’s brutal civil war in 1987. Bravely leading displaced boys across Sudan for hundreds of miles, he eventually arrived in Kenya, and immigrated to the United States in 2001. Since then, John has become the embodiment of the American Dream, now serving as president of the John Dau Foundation, which provides healthcare in South Sudan by building medical clinics and training community health workers.

John captured his harrowing experience and adjustment to life in America in his memoir, God Grew Tired of Us, which was later adapted into an award-winning documentary film. His third book Dinka: The Pillars of Wisdom shares moral and self-improvement lessons through light-hearted inspirational stories.

On stage, with endearing candor and touching humor, he reflects on his remarkable journey overcoming hardship, the promise he made to himself to persevere, and his commitment to giving back. Take away a new outlook on resiliency, an empowered attitude on leadership, and the inspiration necessary to face and conquer any challenge.
