Ruth E. Carter

<p>Ruth E. Carter’s unparalleled ability to develop an authentic story through costume and character has made her one of the most sought-after, renowned, and award-winning costume designers today. </p><p>A two-time Academy Award-winner for “Best Costume Design” (<em>Black Panther </em>in 2019; <em>Black Panther: Wakanda Forever</em> in 2022), Ruth E. Carter has also garnered nominations for Spike Lee’s <em>Malcolm X</em> (1993) and Steven Spielberg’s <em>Amistad</em> (1998). Not only one of today’s most celebrated, sought-after costume designers, Carter has also made history—she was the first Black woman to win an Academy Award in the “Best Costume” Category—and the first to win multiple awards in any Oscar category. </p><p>Carter has worked in the industry for over three decades and has been credited with over forty films and counting. Known for her research and diligence to the craft, specifically for her outstanding work for period ensemble films like the highly praised Lee Daniels’ <em>The Butler</em> and Ava Duvernay’s <em>Selma</em>. </p><p>Her breadth of knowledge in African-American history and art was sought after by Steven Spielberg and Debbie Allen and for the incredible <em>Amistad</em>. Carter recently completed work on the first season of <em>Yellowstone</em>, a television series starring Kevin Costner and directed by Taylor Sheridan. </p><p>In 2021, Carter received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.  </p>
